I do have a set of chains. But yes, when offgrid, I'll airdown and still have the chains on. Just drive slow you don't want the chains hitting your fenders or brake lines.
Usually for what I get myself stuck in, airing down will do the trick. I rarely need to use chains. But if I do, I'll have my tires aired down at the same time. The benefits of the larger tread patch still is important with our without chains.
