Hey all, I'm after a good quality axe with a traditional wood handle and found this "Helko Werk" Black Forest Woodworker axe on Amazon for $178 bucks. The reviews look pretty decent on this thing, but I was trying to find some information about the steel used and specifically how well it holds its edge over time.

Any of you have experience with this companies axes?

I would like to hear how the edge stands up to general usage.

Thanks in advance.

Haven't seen a Helco
Mine is Fiskers.
Very good quality steel and I prefer a composite handle.

When your looking for an axe. You need to figure out if you want a cutting or a splitting axe.
Cutting axe has a narrower head. They cut great but tend to get stuck when splitting.
Splitting axe has a wider head. Splits great, but is harder to cut large diameters with.

The Helco you posted looks like a cutting axe. My Fiskers is a cutting. If I use it to split anything over 6 inch diameter, it sticks badly. I tend to do more splitting, I would be better off with a diffrent axe. I have a 36" chainsaw to cut with.

Nope, can't comment on this one. I have a Husqvarna (think thats how it's spelled). Mine was about $100 on Amazon. Works well for me. I like wood handles myself.

Mines a heavier axe at 4lbs. It's a Amer Felling. I paid $184 for it, so it's pricey, but SOOOO nice to use. It's a power house. The handle was a little rough when I got it, but made it work. I had looked at Helko, Hults Bruk, and Granfors Bruk.

Very good axe. $$$ but you get a made in germany axe that will last you a lifetime. Well assuming you don't lose it.

A good axe is worth its weight in gold. Just getting back from a partially failed trip (roads closed due to down trees).

Hell yeah, that is a beast of an axe!

I have axes that cost $40, and I have axes that have cost me nearly $150. Each have different purpose. All the axes mentioned above are very good.
