If you enjoy adventure and travel, a teardrop trailer can be a great investment for you…
On the one hand, many teardrops offer a roomy sleeping area. On the other hand, teardrops are compact and lightweight, which makes them much simpler to tow over challenging off-road tracks.
Of course, there are many different teardrop trailers available these days. The question is, which one should you consider as an affordable option with loads of features?
I recently had the opportunity to meet up with the folks from Sherpa Trailers, and to say that I was impressed is a massive understatement. Their Bigfoot 5×8 teardrop trailer is a superb example of what a budget-friendly teardrop should be.
So, in today’s article, I’d like to tell you about the Bigfoot trailer and why I think it should be on your shortlist of teardrops to buy.

How is the Bigfoot Constructed?
Sherpa Trailers offers two models: the Yeti and the Bigfoot. The Yeti is the on-road variant, while the Bigfoot is a 5×8 teardrop trailer for off-road use.
The Bigfoot comes with a complete suspension and 31-inch tires that are excellent for rough terrain. It also has a solid plywood floor and walls, as well as a strong 2-by-4 structure in the ceiling and the front and rear bulkheads. This structure provides a solid base for the trailer that enables it to withstand the rigors of off-road travel.
Inside, you’ll find a carpeted cabin with a Mahogany plywood ceiling. The roof has 1.5-inch foam insulation between the 2×4 ribs. Outside is 24-gauge sheet metal flashing that comes in 23 different colors. The roof is a two-part 040-aluminum skin that offers supreme protection from the elements.
The Bigfoot is a 5×8 Teardrop Trailer That’s Light and Easy to Maneuver
A good trailer needs to be both compact and light enough to be easily towed over rough terrain. It also must be large enough to contain your gear and offer a safe sleeping place. The Bigfoot from Sherpa Trailers gets the right combination of both.
The Bigfoot 5×8 teardrop trailer weighs only 1,300 pounds dry, making it a lightweight trailer that can be towed by a two-door sport utility vehicle or a crossover like the Subaru Forester. The higher your car’s tow rating, the more smoothly it will tow the Bigfoot.
It is advised that using any vehicle in the range of a Toyota 4Runner, or a midrange or even full-size truck, for off-roading can give the best towing experience. Even on tough terrain, these vehicles won’t have a problem towing the weight of this trailer.
Sherpa Trailers Gives You Plenty of Features (and Options, Too!)
Sherpa Trailers’ Bigfoot trailer is mainly designed for off-road use (though it’s certainly a good option for on-road use, too). Below are some standard and optional features that you can add to your trailer to increase comfort based on your needs.
Standard Features of the Bigfoot 5×8 Teardrop Trailer
This Bigfoot 5×8 teardrop trailer is great for its price, as it contains many standard features that guarantee a comfortable trip virtually anywhere you like.
As I mentioned earlier, the Bigfoot comes with 31-inch tires on it. To be able to handle difficult off-road paths, it has a leaf spring suspension with a straight axle (1400-lbs spring on each side) that provides excellent strength and is also inexpensive to maintain. The Bigfoot also has heavy-duty aluminum fenders.
It features two doors to take advantage of a cross-breeze in the cabin. In order to increase airflow even further, one side has a vent, and on the other side, there is a 12-volt fan.
The 5×8 Teardrop trailer dimensions allow a queen-sized mattress to fit without any problems. That enables you to stretch out, whether you’re going camping by yourself or with company. If you require extra sleeping space, you can add a rooftop tent.
The Bigfoot also includes a 6-port power strip for charging your devices. Additionally, there is an external connection, so you may use a generator or shore power. There is LED lighting and outside lighting so that you can enjoy the night both inside and outside the trailer.
A wheeled jack located on the front of the trailer makes moving it around incredibly simple. The two stabilizer jacks in the back prevent the trailer from rocking and rolling when you camp for the night.
Modify Your Bigfoot 5×8 Teardrop Trailer With These Options
The Bigfoot 5×8 teardrop trailer can be modified with a wide range of options. This includes extra features for the trailer’s interior and external comfort and efficiency.
For example, you can add an 8′ x 8′ awning for some protected outdoor living space. If you want to take things up a notch, a full deluxe awning room with a floor is also available.
Additional options include additional windows in the cabin and a back door for easier access to the cabin. You can also add a side table for dining and cooking.
And that’s just the start of the list of optional features Sherpa Trailers offers! While some teardrop companies offer bare-bones rigs with few options, Sherpa Trailers has taken a different approach. With a laundry list of standard and optional features, you can get a truly bespoke trailer outfitted for your personal needs. What’s not to like about that?!
This 5×8 Teardrop Trailer Saves You Money
As if the Bigfoot’s maneuverability, features, and options aren’t enough, there’s one more thing that makes it such a great option for your overlanding and off-roading adventures – it’s difficult to beat in terms of price.
The Bigfoot is one of the most affordable teardrop trailers available. That means you can level up your overlanding experience without blowing your budget. Additionally, since the trailer is so lightweight, your vehicle will use less fuel to tow it than a larger, heavier teardrop, saving you even more money now and in the future.
In other words, the Bigfoot will improve your travel and make it a much more comfortable and entertaining experience. But don’t take my word for it – get in touch with Sherpa Trailers today to learn more about the Bigfoot 5×8 teardrop trailer.
