Benefits of Camping: Reduced Stress and Anxiety

One of the most well-known benefits of camping is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety.

Research has shown that spending time in nature can help lower cortisol levels, the hormones responsible for stress. Additionally, being surrounded by natural scenery can have a calming effect on the mind, helping to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

In fact, the research referenced above found that spending just 20 minutes in nature can lead to a significant decrease in stress levels. In our increasingly stressful world, taking a few minutes to enjoy nature is an easy way to slow down and let go of some of the day’s worries.

But if spending just 20 minutes outdoors can significantly impact your stress levels, imagine what a weekend of camping can do!

Benefits of Camping: Improved Sleep Quality

Another benefit of camping is improved sleep quality. According to a study published in the journal Current Biology, camping can help to reset your internal clock, leading to better sleep quality and overall health.

But how?

When camping, you’re exposed to natural light and fresh air, which can help regulate your body’s circadian rhythm and improve your sleep cycle. Additionally, the physical activity involved in camping, such as hiking or setting up camp, can help to tire you out and promote better sleep.

Of course, you can do other things that set you up for a great night’s sleep and enjoy the benefits of camping even more…

For example, invest in the best mattress you can afford. Whether you sleep in a ground tent on an air mattress (I love the Exped Megamat, shown above), in a trailer or RV on a camper mattress, or in a rooftop tent like I do, a high-quality mattress will only help you drift off to sleep and get a better night’s rest.

I’d also suggest investing in a method of keeping your sleeping quarters toasty warm, too. After all, it’s hard to sleep when you’re so cold that you’re shivering!

My solution for this problem is to have a portable diesel heater to provide instant, dry heat to my rooftop tent.

In my case, I have a Planar Heaters 4kw diesel heater that offers plenty of firepower for keeping my rooftop tent the ideal temperature for sleeping – even when I’m winter camping in the mountains.

What I love about this unit is that it is so simple to operate (simplicity is another one of the best benefits of camping!). It runs on diesel or kerosene and needs a 12-volt power source. It takes just a few moments to fill the tank, hook the heater up to the battery, and run the heating duct into my tent.

Then, when I fire this bad boy up, I get that instant, dry heat that feels oh-so-good when it’s chilly outside. And since there’s no humidity from the heater, I don’t have to worry about condensation forming inside the tent.

Something else I don’t have to worry about is carbon monoxide poisoning. Since the unit sits outside on the ground and away from my tent, the danger of toxic fumes coming inside the tent is virtually zero. So, I can enjoy a warm tent without the added stress and worry of wondering if my heater is slowly killing me!

In my video below, you can see this heater in action and get some insights into its many features and benefits of camping with one:

Now, I understand that a diesel heater like this might seem like overkill. Trust me when I say that it’s been a game-changing upgrade to my overlanding setup – especially when my son, who’s prone to getting cold – is with me.

Head over to Planar Heaters to give the 4kw portable diesel heater a further look. You can check out the 2kw portable diesel heater while you’re there in case 4kw is a little too beefy for your camping needs.

Benefits of Camping: Improved Physical Fitness

Camping is a great way to improve physical fitness for a number of reasons…

First, camping typically involves a lot of physical activity, such as hiking, swimming, and setting up camp. Though none of these activities are necessarily high-impact, they can help build endurance and improve overall cardiovascular health. These activities can also help strengthen muscles and improve balance and coordination.

In addition to the physical activities that are typically associated with camping, spending time in nature itself can also be one of the benefits of camping. In addition to reducing anxiety and stress (as discussed earlier), studies have shown that being in nature can lower blood pressure and reduce the incidence of depression, which can positively impact overall physical well-being.

Furthermore, camping often involves spending time away from technology and other modern conveniences. By unplugging for a while, you can engage in more physical activity and rely less on sedentary habits. For example, instead of watching TV or playing video games, campers may opt to bike, trail run, or other activities, which can contribute to improved fitness levels over time.

Benefits of Camping: Build Better Bonds With Loved Ones

Camping is a great way to improve social bonds, as it provides an opportunity to spend quality time with friends, family, or other camping companions. When camping, you work together to set up camp, prepare meals, and engage in outdoor activities, creating camaraderie and strengthening relationships.

As mentioned earlier, camping also allows you to take a break from technology and other distractions. By unplugging for a bit, you can turn your focus to spending time with friends and family. This, in turn, can lead to more meaningful conversations and improved connections with the people you love.

Additionally, camping is a shared experience. You’re out there roughing it and “surviving,” which creates lasting memories. The stories you share around the campfire and the memories you make give you something to reminisce about for years to come.

In other words, camping provides a unique opportunity to disconnect from daily life and connect with others in a natural setting. Not only can this help improve social bonds and create meaningful relationships, but it can also have lasting positive effects on your physical and mental health. So, grab your gear, get out the door, and enjoy the benefits of camping!
