The Chevy Silverado ZR2 Is Finally Here – Let’s See What It Has to Offer

Chevy wasn’t buying into the big pickup truck / off-road racer game and didn’t seem to care that Ford was doing great in that segment with the Raptor.

But as the whole market is slowly shifting towards capable trucks that can be modified and altered for off-road use or overlanding the engineers at Chevrolet decided to give the all-new Silverado a huge upgrade with the ZR2 model.

This may not be an exact rival to the Raptor but it’s definitely a much more capable off-roader than the normal truck.

So, in this article, we will be going over 8 features you need to know about the new Chevy Silverado ZR2!

The All-New Looks

The ZR2 is based on the normal Silverado as mentioned above; therefore, it does feature the new design for 2022.

Of course, being the off-road model, it does have some unique features that make it look even better such as different bumpers and unique color touches.

Chevy Silverado ZR2 Approach Angles, Departure Angles, and Ground Clearance

The front bumper is uniquely designed for the ZR2 and to our surprise, it is made from steel. I don’t know of many new cars that come with steel bumpers from the factory these days.  The corners of the bumper are also removable in case you do some damage when off-roading.

With the new bumper, the approach angle of the vehicle is greatly increased and by removing the exhaust from the rear bumper the departure angle is also better and you won’t bash the exhaust system if you happen to get down something a bit too steep.

Total ground clearance is close to 11 inches which is plenty for a stock vehicle like the Chevy Silverado ZR2.

Suspension Upgrades

The suspension is a DSSV Multimatic system which is similar to the Colorado ZR2 but bigger as it needs to handle the extra weight of the larger truck. The rest of the suspension including the control arms is the same as the trail boss Silverado.

The Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bed

The ZR2 is only available as a crew cab with a shorter bed which isn’t small at all. The bed is made from steel and the total cargo volume is about 89 cubic feet. Maximum payload is rated at 1440 pounds, and you even have access to a power outlet and lights back there.

Towing is rated at 8900 pounds which isn’t bad.

The Chevy Silverado ZR2 Engine

Under the hood, you will find a massive 6.2L V8 with 420 horsepower and 460lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic, and this is the only engine-transmission configuration available for this vehicle.

The Tires and Wheels Get an Upgrade

The tires on the Chevy Silverado ZR2 are 33-inch-tall Goodyear all terrains and are mounted to a unique for the truck 18-inch wheel.

Interior Treatment

The interior has been redesigned and features a boxier look. A 13.4-inch screen is located on the center console and a 12.3-inch screen is mounted right in front of the driver and features everything from RPM to driving modes.

The interior design will be similar throughout the whole line-up of the Silverado.

The Chevy Silverado ZR2 Comes With Front and Rear Lockers

There are plenty of buttons inside the Silverado but in my opinion, the most interesting ones are those of the front and rear locker. This truck is the only half-ton truck to feature both a front and rear locker and this can be what sets it apart out on the trail.

The Chevy Silverado ZR2 will be available around spring of 2022; so, until then you have plenty of time to research which half-ton truck to buy! The ZR2 certainly looks like a good one though.
