A Little Background…

My first experience with the Roof Space 2 rooftop tent was at Overland West in Flagstaff, Arizona, in 2024. I remember seeing it for the first time and doing a double-take because it’s a rooftop tent unlike any other I’d ever seen. As I alluded to above and will elaborate on below, the combination of the fusion design, panoramic mode, and lightning-quick setup and takedown made this tent one to remember.

In fact, I named this tent as one of the best rooftop tents of 2024 last year based in large part on my explorations with it at Overland West. It was that impressive.

Then, a few months later at Overland Mountain West 2024 in Loveland, Colorado, I had the opportunity to see the tent again. This time, I also had the opportunity to do a deeper dive into the tent and was left even more impressed than before. You can check out the tour of the tent in the video above.

So, from seeing it debut in Arizona to getting a thorough guided tour in Colorado to actually having the tent in my possession here in Southern California, it’s been a fun journey so far with the Roof Space 2 rooftop tent!

Overview of the Roof Space 2 Rooftop Tent

The Roof Space 2 Rooftop Tent is a groundbreaking innovation in outdoor gear. Dubbed the world’s first “fusion-category” rooftop tent, it combines the compact mounting footprint and spacious interior of a soft-shell tent with the durability and ease of use of a hard-shell tent. At its core, this tent is designed for adventurers who refuse to compromise on comfort, functionality, or sustainability.

Weighing just 147 pounds, the Roof Space 2 is incredibly lightweight, making it compatible with almost any vehicle larger than a Mini Cooper, from sedans to SUVs to trucks. It features a high-quality aluminum shell that minimizes wind resistance for better fuel efficiency and includes innovative features like “Panorama Mode,” which opens the entire front of the tent for a stunning rooftop terrace experience. It’s clear that every aspect of the Roof Space 2 has been meticulously designed with explorers like you and me in mind!

Roof Space 2 Rooftop Tent Design and Build Quality

The Roof Space 2 sets a new standard for rooftop tents with its exceptional design and build quality. Crafted entirely from 5052 aluminum, the tent’s shell is lightweight, durable, and aerodynamically efficient. Unlike many competitors that rely on ABS or fiberglass materials, this tent is 90% recyclable, aligning with its creators’ eco-friendly philosophy.

Inside, the tent offers generous dimensions, with 98 inches in length, 59 inches in width, and up to 51 inches in height. These measurements translate to a comfortable sleeping area for two adults and either a child or a furry friend. The high-quality mattress, complete with an anti-condensation mesh and washable quilted cover, ensures a cozy night’s sleep after a long day of exploring.

The inclusion of panoramic windows adds to the tent’s appeal, flooding the interior with natural light while offering incredible views of the outdoors. Even on rainy days, you can stay warm and dry while still feeling connected to your surroundings. Not bad, right?!

Roof Space 2 Rooftop Tent Setup and Usability

One of the best features of the Roof Space 2 is its ease of setup. Thanks to powerful gas struts and a single-flip mechanism, the tent can be fully deployed in under a minute. For solo travelers, this feature is a game changer, allowing for quick transitions between traveling and camping without the need for extra hands.

The tent’s compact design doesn’t sacrifice functionality, though. It includes a telescopic ladder for easy access, and its internal steel cable structure ensures stability, even without the ladder. This redundant stability system adds peace of mind, especially in windy conditions, which I always seem to encounter when I’m camping.

The thoughtful design extends to storage as well. With one foot of extra storage space at the foot of the bed, you can easily stash bags, shoes, and other essentials without cluttering your sleeping area. Additionally, the tent is designed to accommodate bedding for two people when closed, saving time during setup and takedown.

This is especially nice for me since my adventure buddy is typically my young son. So, when it’s time to pack up and head out, I can put him in charge of organizing the bedding without needing him to drag everything out of the tent.

Roof Space 2 Rooftop Tent Comfort and Space

Comfort is where the Roof Space 2 truly excels. The sleeping area measures 80.7 by 53.1 inches, which is slightly narrower than a queen-sized bed but still spacious enough for two adults. The mattress is a highlight, offering a level of support and quality rarely found in rooftop tents. Its integrated anti-condensation mat ensures you stay dry and comfortable, too, even in humid conditions.

The tent’s height—up to 51 inches—provides plenty of headroom, making it easy to sit up and move around. This is particularly beneficial for extended stays, as it eliminates the claustrophobic feel common in many rooftop tents. The panoramic windows and front-opening “Panorama Mode” I’ve mentioned already both transform the tent into a cozy lounge, perfect for taking in breathtaking views or enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning.

Roof Space 2 Rooftop Tent Performance in Various Conditions

When it comes to performance, the Roof Space 2 is built to handle a wide range of environments. The durable aluminum shell offers excellent protection against wind, rain, and UV rays, making it suitable for everything from coastal camping trips here in the L.A. area to rugged mountain expeditions in places like Big Bear.

If you love stargazing (and looking for airplanes in the night sky as my son and I like to do), the panoramic windows offer a unique way to enjoy the night sky without leaving the warmth of your sleeping bag. And when it’s time to close up for the night, the high-quality zippers and reinforced seams keep you protected from the elements to ensure a restful sleep.

Speaking of restful, the combination of space, quality of mattress, and high-quality materials makes this tent a truly luxurious experience. The difference between this tent and a typical rooftop tent is like the difference between a Bentley and a Hyundai. There’s just no comparison!

Roof Space 2 Rooftop Tent Portability and Storage

Despite its spacious interior, the Roof Space 2 is incredibly compact when packed. Measuring just 61.5 inches long, 53.5 inches wide, and 9.4 inches high, it has one of the smallest mounting footprints in its class. As I noted earlier, this makes it compatible with a wide range of vehicles and easy to transport.

The lightweight design—just 147 pounds—is another advantage,ļas it reduces the impact on your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Mounting and dismounting the tent is straightforward as well, thanks to its well-designed roof rack brackets and lightweight construction. If you value convenience and efficiency (who doesn’t?!), the Roof Space 2’s portability is a major selling point.

Roof Space 2 Rooftop Tent Value for Money

At its price point of $3,499.99, the Roof Space 2 rooftop tent offers exceptional value for money. Its combination of durability, ease of use, and innovative features positions it as a top contender in the rooftop tent market. The inclusion of essential accessories like a high-quality mattress, anti-condensation mat, telescopic ladder, and gear bag adds to its overall value.

Furthermore, the tent’s eco-friendly design and focus on repairability ensure it’s a long-term investment. And, as I mentioned earlier, unlike many competitors that rely on hard-to-recycle materials, the Roof Space 2 is 90% recyclable, making it a more sustainable choice for environmentally conscious campers.

In other words, the Roof Space 2 rooftop tent is a triumph of design and functionality. By blending the best features of hard-shell and soft-shell tents, it eliminates the compromises that adventurers have come to expect. Whether you’re drawn to its ease of setup, panoramic views, or eco-friendly design, this tent has something for everyone.

If you’re looking for a rooftop tent that combines comfort, durability, and innovation, the Roof Space 2 deserves a spot on your shortlist. With its thoughtful design and impressive performance, it’s ready to elevate your camping experience to new heights!
