How to Make Minimalist Camping a More Comfortable Experience

Minimalist camping doesn’t necessarily need to involve sleeping on the ground underneath a tarp. With a few additions, like a compact and easy-to-tow trailer, you can have a comfortable setup that won’t break the bank.

One of our favorite minimalist trailers is the Sunnyside Offroad Bunejug trailer. Due to its design, it can be useful for camping, hunting, and many other types of outdoor recreation.

Let’s have a look at how the Bunejug can help you make the most of your minimalist camping experiences.

What is Minimalist Camping?

Minimalist camping involves using just the gear you need (and not the gear you might want). This can involve a nice sleeping setup, some space to organize your clothes and prepare food, and a convenient table and stove on which to cook. If you want to take your minimalist camping a bit further, you can cook straight on the campfire, use a stump as a table, and sleep in a bivy sack.

The word minimalist is often confused with using nothing at all. To engage in minimalist camping, you won’t need to sleep on the ground and eat worms (like Kent Survival in the video above). Instead, you figure out the minimal amount of gear you need to remain comfortable and have a good time, and stick to that without carrying excessive gear.

Doing so offers a few benefits. First, you don’t go hog-wild buying gear you don’t need. Second, when you decide it’s time for a camping adventure, you have less stuff to pack and organize. This leads to the third advantage – you can get out of the house and on the road more quickly!

Again, going minimal doesn’t mean that you can’t have nice things or gear that makes minimalist camping a more enjoyable experience.

Though having a trailer might not seem like it jives with our minimalist camping vibe, there are trailers – like the Sunnyside Offroad Bunejug – that are purpose-built for minimalist camping.

Due to its size and minimalist design, the Bunejug is the perfect trailer to tow with a smaller SUV or truck, an AWD wagon like the Subaru Outback, or even with your UTV.

Below are all the specs you need to know:

  • Exterior Dimensions When Open: 48″ x 96″ x 44″
  • Exterior Dimensions When Closed: 48″ x 48″ x 15″
  • Annex Footprint: 5’x 5′
  • Annex Weight: 22lbs
  • Sleeping Footprint: 46″ x 94″
  • Peak Internal Height: 45″
  • Tent Weight: 98lbs
  • Static Weight Capacity: 550 lbs.
  • Sleeping Capacity: 2 People
  • Total Trailer Weight: 650lbs

So, the Bunejug gives you space for important stuff – sleeping and gear storage – and omits features that add weight and diminish its off-road capabilities.

Bunejug Off-Road Readiness

Aside from the compact size and low weight, the Bunjug’s off-road suspension also helps it shine when the going gets rough.

The system is a custom fabricated, long-travel, independent trailing arm design equipped with load-adjusting shocks. It’s been built and tested to be the smoothest riding trailer out there.

If you’re someone who needs to tow a trailer in remote and rough areas for whatever reason, the Bunejug is one of the best options on the current market in terms of its size, weight, maneuverability, and off-road prowess.

Comfortable Minimalist Camping

As mentioned above, minimalist camping doesn’t need to be uncomfortable. The optional rooftop tent offered with the Bunejug ensures you have a great night’s sleep regardless of where you happen to be.

The tent specs include:

  • 280G poly-cotton rip-stop tent fabric with a one-inch internal aluminum frame
  • 420D Polyester Oxford rainfly with taped seams and PU coating
  • No-see-um mesh mosquito screen
  • Three-inch-thick high-density foam mattress with a washable poly-cotton cover

An important feature of the tent to keep in mind is the mattress. In this case, it’s a thick three-inch high-density memory foam mattress that’s perfect when it comes to staying comfortable and warm during your minimalist camping adventures.

With the rooftop tent, you also get the benefit of sleeping in an elevated position which for many folks feels safer than being on the ground. It also makes packing up in rainy weather easier as you don’t have to deal with a tent that was sitting in the mud all night long.

Furthermore, rooftop tents pack up more quickly than ground tents. Therefore, you will spend less time packing up camp in the morning and more time on the road exploring the places you always wanted to see. The same is true when the time comes to set up camp again – it takes just a few minutes to get things set up so you have more time for exploring.

Your Go-Anywhere Trailer

Most trailers nowadays are big and heavy. This means that you need a vehicle capable of towing them, and even if you do have such a vehicle, you’re still limited as to which areas you can access due to size limitations.

With the Bunejug you won’t have such issues. The small size and low weight mean it will fit through most trails and won’t be a hindrance to your vehicle’s abilities. The off-road suspension also provides the strength, durability, and wheel travel needed to make sure the trailer can handle what you throw at it. You can’t beat small and lightweight when it comes to off-road trailers!

Final Thoughts

The Bunejug is a great trailer for anyone who wants a capable unit that can be towed by just about any vehicle. It also offers what you need in terms of storage capacity and sleeping quarters without going overboard.

The design of this trailer makes it an ideal companion for minimalist camping, hunting, and other outdoor adventures. Use the top of the trailer to carry kayaks or other gear rather than a tent. Hook up to your UTV and bring the trailer with you on a daytime adventure to use as a base camp. The versatility of the Bunejug is endless!

Plus, for the price, this trailer is very hard to beat. With so many trailers out there with eye-popping price tags, it’s nice to have an option like this that gives you the ability to head out at a moment’s notice and explore the outdoors unimpeded. That’s what minimalist camping is all about!
