A few years back, I was looking for a good mattress for my camping adventures. I ended up with the Exped Megamat 10 Duo. What sold me on the Megamat was a review I watched in which the person said it was nearly as comfortable as their $1,000 bed at home.
Now, the Megamat is comfortable. It’s been a fantastic sleeping pad. But I’ve never found it to be comparable to my mattress at home. So, I recently decided to give another pad a try – this time, it’s the Hest Foamy Wide camping mattress.
Not to let the cat out of the bag, but the Hest Foamy is the most comfortable mattress I’ve tested to date. This thing legitimately compares to my home mattress and offers a superior foundation for a great night’s sleep.
So, with that said, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of this Hest Foamy review so you can learn why I’m so impressed with this thing!

Hest Foamy Review: Essential Specs
As I noted earlier, I have the Hest Foamy Wide version. This bad boy is designed for adventurers seeking maximal comfort and support.
The Hest Foamy Wide measures 78″ long, 30″ wide and has a thickness of 8.8″. Weighing in at a manageable 13 pounds, it strikes a balance between portability and luxury. The dimensions make it ideal for various setups, whether it’s in your tent, truck bed, camper, or in a roof tent. This mattress’ size offers plenty of room for a good night’s sleep whether I’m on my back or side.
I usually camp in a rooftop tent, but also have various ground tents that I use depending on where I’m going and who else is along for the ride. At this juncture, I’ve only tested the Foamy in my ground tents.
A nice feature is that the mattress has an integrated steel handle for easy transport. This is great for snagging the mattress out of my truck to put in a ground tent. It will also be appreciated when I test this bad boy in my rooftop tent and need to carry it up the ladder!
Hest Foamy Review: Packed With Features
I know that “packed with features” might sound like a weird description for a sleeping pad, but it’s the truth! Hest has elevated the camping sleeping experience by adding all sorts of goodies to make the Foamy such a champ.
Enhanced Memory Foam
The Foamy boasts two layers of high-performance memory foam, engineered for optimal body alignment, pressure point relief, and temperature regulation. This innovative construction sets it apart as one of the most comfortable camping mattresses available.
The top layer of foam is plush and contours your body. It’s also the layer responsible for temperature regulation (by the way, this mattress has an R-value of 8.8, which is among the best on the portable camping mattress market). The bottom foam layer, on the other hand, provides pressure point relief while supporting your body, whether you’re a stomach, back, or side sleeper.
Outdoor Ready
Built to withstand the rigors of outdoor excursions, the Foamy features an integrated compression strap for easy transport and storage. Its durable, temperature-resilient memory foam ensures it’s ready for camping in diverse conditions, too.
What’s more, Hest has covered the lower part of the mattress with a waterproof fabric. This keeps you and the mattress dry, and ensures you can still get a good night’s sleep, even if the ground is a bit on the wet side. The fact that you don’t have to pump air into it is a nice touch as well.
Grab & Go Design
The Foamy rolls tight (it’s Hest’s most portable mattress yet) for hassle-free transport, and as I mentioned earlier, the built-in handle makes carrying a breeze. With no need for pumps or inflation, you can toss it in your truck, trailer, or RV and hit the road without any setup hassles.
Thoughtful Design
A pocket at the top of the mattress provides a convenient spot for your phone and other small essentials. Additionally, when unrolled, the compression harness doubles as a welcome mat, offering a dry, flat platform for changing. Nice!
Additionally, Hest has added connector clips on the sides of the Foamy so you can expand the sleeping space as needed. Take one mattress for your solo trips, then when you have your significant other along for the ride, clip two Foamy mattresses together for extra space.
On top of that, the Hest Foamy has a removable and washable cover – a must for those of us who enjoy hiking, biking, and other activities that can grunge up our gear! While we’re at it, this mattress is made from waterproof and dirt resistant materials, so you can enjoy the great outdoors with less worry about how it’s going to impact your sleeping pad.
Hest Foamy Review: The Comfort Experience
As I explained in the introduction, this is hands-down the most comfortable sleeping pad I’ve ever used. And it’s not like I’ve been sleeping on terrible pads all these years, so that’s saying something for the comfort level of the Foamy.
Let’s break the comfort situation down a little further:
- The Foamy Wide gives you five extra inches width-wise (30 inches versus 25 inches) over the regular-sized foamy. I’m over six feet tall and tip the scales at about 220 pounds, so having a little extra real estate to move around is a definite bonus.
- The foam inside the mattress is polyfoam – the same stuff used in many residential mattresses. It’s memory foam, too, so it really hugs your body and supports you well from head to toe.
- The 8.8 R-value I mentioned earlier is so fantastic for cold-weather camping. I do a lot of trips in the late fall, winter, and early spring when the temperature can get well below freezing, so having that insulative power in my sleeping pad certainly boosts the comfort experience.
- So far, I’ve used the Hest Foamy on top of the Byer of Maine Easy Cot. It’s an extra-large cot that measures 78″ long, 31″ wide, and 18″ tall. I think having the support of the cot under the Foamy makes it an even more comfortable night’s sleep.
All of these factors contribute to a fantastic sleep experience. When I’m sleeping on the Hest Foamy, I wake up the next morning feeling relaxed, refreshed, and rejuvenated because I slept so well the night before.
And a good night’s sleep is important! When you’re camping, you need to get a quality night’s sleep so you have the energy necessary for adventuring the next day. That’s to say nothing of the benefits of sleep for keeping your mood elevated and your head clear. When you’re out in the wilderness, you need your wits about you so you don’t make critical errors, and that all begins with a comfortable night’s sleep.
Hest Foamy: Is It the Sleeping Pad for You?
At around $350, the Hest Foamy Wide is a decent investment of cash. And while that price point might give you pause, I’m here to tell you that it’s an investment that’s well worth it.
I firmly believe that you just don’t skimp on some things. Your camping sleeping system is one of those. Why bother going camping if you feel terrible every morning after a crap night’s sleep?! I know I don’t enjoy my time nearly as much if I’m tired, sore, and cranky!
So, if you love the outdoors but don’t love how you sleep when you’re traveling, the Hest Foamy is for you. It is supremely comfortable, easy to pack and unpack, and stuffed with features that make it a functional, durable addition to your camping sleep setup!
