Which year Jeep Wrangler year has lowest maintenance?

I'm helping out a friend who wants to buy their first offroad vehicle. They are going to buy used, but was asking which year Jeep Wrangler has the lowest maintenance cost?

Maintenance wise, everything has a life span. How much he puts in it initially will be based on the previous owners maintenance. On anything, parts "start" to wear about 75k. Sooner if very little maintenance was done. You can go 150K with nothing but oil changes then one day everything wears out at the same time.

I can tell you this, the newer the model year the better. Stay away from TJ's and older. The first three years of JK had odd issues. On those it was hit or miss.

Get maintenance records, Be careful of a 100k vehicle where the guy says "I never had to replace anything". I strongly suggest on anything used, send out an oil sample when the first oil change is due. I use Blackstone Lab. This will give you a full report on everything internal engine. Unfortunately, he's going to drive it about 5k before he does this.

I also recommend, everyone send out a sample every year.

When it comes to Jeep Wranglers, maintenance costs can vary depending on the model year and how well the vehicle was maintained by previous owners. Generally, the Jeep Wrangler models from 2012-2018, specifically the JK generation, are known to be reliable (famous last words) with relatively lower maintenance costs compared to older models.

Key reasons why 2012-2018 models are a good choice:

  1. Engine Improvements: The 2012 model year introduced the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, which is more efficient and reliable compared to the older 3.8L V6.
  2. Better Features: These models come with more modern features and updates, reducing the need for aftermarket modifications (obviously many do regardless).
  3. Parts Availability: Since these models are relatively recent, parts are more readily available and often cheaper.
  4. Common Issues Known: By now, common issues for these model years are well-documented, making it easier to find a well-maintained vehicle and avoid known problems. Not to mention tons and tons of videos on YouTube.
However, it's important to have any used vehicle thoroughly inspected by a mechanic to ensure it’s in good condition before you buy. Or after I guess, either way get it inspected. Maintenance costs can vary based on the vehicle's history, so a well-maintained older model might actually be cheaper to keep running than a neglected newer one. Hope this helps.
