I keep them on the roof rack all the time mate regardless of them being muddy or not

I throw them in the bed! One of the joys of having a pickup is that you do not need to worry about muddy stuff ruining your interior

A good point on SUVs is the spare wheel mate. There are some mounts that help you put them on there if you do not want them inside the car
