What to store and what not to store on a roof rack?

Store light stuff like a tent maybe a camping table, a few tools etc. Avoid strapping heavy wheels and fuel up there as they through off your centre of gravity
 
Put everything that Is light and not tall. This will help avoid destroying your vehicles centre of gravity ad clipping every branch with the stuff on the roof
 
Try putting low profile stuff. If you are not doing any serious off roading you could strap a few jerry cans up there
