The Salton Sea in California

We just got back from a Southern California adventure and the Salton Sea was the surprising star of the trip for us. Not going to beat around the bush it was HOT there, and I mean VERY hot. But fascinating to see this in person. The history here is remarkable. I will say the smell is strong. Very strong. But 100% worth it and would recommend.

I was there in 2004, it's amazing what that place has been though. Is there still all the artsy stuff all over the place?

Did you do any exploring around Anza Borrego? There’s a ton of stuff in that area and the history is fascinating. The area is about 2.5 hours south of me. I go there a few times a year.

Smell is just to much for me, been there a couple times and each time, I need to leave as the smell is just to much.

People camp out there? Isn't it full of homeless people out there? Last time we were there, all we saw were a lot of homeless people and vandalism. Not exactly safe place to go setting up camp. Plus, who would want to smell that all day?

I use salton sea as a reference point. I normally camp in anza borrego or ocotillo. Salton sea is a bit ghetto and smells.

And as it dehydrates more and more, the smell is going to get worse there. I have a sensitive nose, it's a bit rough for me there.

I totally get where you're coming from with your Salton Sea experience. It's definitely a fascinating place (in smelling kind of way) with a rich history, and seeing it in person is something special (to check off the old bucket list). The landscape is unique, and there's something intriguing about its past, from being a bustling resort destination to what it is today.

That said, I completely understand your mixed feelings about the heat and the smell. The temperatures can be brutal, especially during the summer, which makes exploring a bit challenging. And the odor from the sea is definitely something you notice—it’s part of the experience but can be overwhelming at times.

Despite these factors, the Salton Sea has a quirky charm that makes it worth visiting, at least once, especially if you're into exploring off-the-beaten-path locations. It's one of those places that leaves a lasting impression, both good and not-so-good, but all part of the adventure.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts—it's always interesting to hear different perspectives on such a unique destination!
