We are going to be up in Montana first week of July and looking for places to disperse camp, ideally away from larger groups of people. Remote as possible. Can you suggest some ares worth exploring please?

Howdy! You're in for a real treat heading up to Montana in July. If you’re looking to escape the crowds and find some peace and quiet, there are a few gems you might want to explore for some good ol' fashioned dispersed camping.

  1. Custer Gallatin National Forest: This is a vast area with plenty of nooks and crannies to tuck yourself away in. Consider the area near Bridger Range or Crazy Mountains for some truly stunning and secluded spots.
  2. Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest: This forest is massive and offers a plethora of remote sites. Gravelly Range is a fantastic choice if you’re looking to get deep into nature.
  3. Flathead National Forest: If you’re near the Glacier National Park area but want to avoid the hustle and bustle, try heading south into Flathead National Forest. The Swan Range and Bob Marshall Wilderness areas are particularly remote.
  4. Kootenai National Forest: Up in the northwest corner of the state, this forest is often overlooked but absolutely gorgeous. Cabinet Mountains Wilderness offers some breathtaking views and plenty of solitude.
Make sure to check local regulations for dispersed camping and always follow Leave No Trace principles to keep these beautiful areas pristine. Enjoy your adventure and the wide-open spaces of Big Sky Country! Happy camping!
