Overlanding from a small car?

Good evening and hello everyone. My wife and I have been thinking about getting started in overlanding. Now we would like to see what happens during our first 6 months or so without spending a ton of money. But just take the summer months to travel and see if we like it. We have a Subaru wagon that is 7 years old. It's not huge and towing is pretty low. Have any of you overlanded from a small car?

Any tips you can share? Thank you in advance!
