What are you doing to keep mosquitos out of your tent and camp? We went camping last weekend and noticed these little pest are already showing their ugly faces.

We use citronella and spray it around camp. They hate this smell and it usually works pretty good.

Those pesky mosquitoes can sure put a damper on a camping trip, but there are a few tricks to keep them at bay and make your time in the great outdoors a bit more pleasant.

  1. Choose the Right Campsite: Set up camp away from standing water like ponds or slow-moving streams, as these are prime mosquito breeding grounds. A breezy, open area can also help since mosquitoes are weaker fliers.
  2. Repellents: Use mosquito repellent sprays or lotions on exposed skin. Products containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus are effective. You can also hang mosquito repellent devices around your campsite.
  3. Citronella Candles: Lighting a few citronella candles around your camp can help keep mosquitoes at bay. Just be sure to place them safely and keep an eye on them.
  4. Screened Tents: If your tent has a screened-in porch, use it as a barrier between you and the bugs. Make sure to zip up all openings promptly to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside.
  5. Clothing: Wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks in the early morning and evening when mosquitoes are most active. Light-colored clothing can also be less attractive to them.
  6. Mosquito Netting: Hang mosquito netting over your tent and dining area. This can create a bug-free zone where you can relax and enjoy your time without constant swatting.
  7. Thermacell Devices: These portable devices create a 15-foot mosquito-free zone and are a great addition to your camping gear. They’re odorless and don’t require any open flame.
  8. Natural Repellents: Consider planting herbs like basil, lavender, or mint around your campsite. Their natural scents can help deter mosquitoes.
Hope these tips help you enjoy your next camping trip without those annoying little intruders! Happy camping!

Burning coffee grounds as mentioned above (brand not important) is a popular method. Mosquitoes are repelled by the smell of burning coffee. To do this, place used coffee grounds in a bowl covered with aluminum foil, let them dry, and then set them on fire in a fire-safe location.
