how can I tell when it's time to change my old suspension?

Check if it is leaking oil. Also, how does the vehicle behave? if it is bouncing excessively then you have a good sign that the suspension is tired
 
As said above, it will probably start leaking. Then you will fell the car bouncing after a speed bump or so. It will behave differently on the road. Especially when loaded
