Has anyone used a hand winch before? Are they an effective way of recovering a vehicle?

They do work but definatelly not as well, easy or as fast as an electric one. To be honest the price between a good quality hand winch (tirfor) and an electric winch isn't that big. I would save up and go for the electric
 
I have used them before, they are effective but cannot do the range of recoveries the electric one can
