Converting military Humvee to overlanding rig?

I've been looking at various sites that sell old military Humvees and some of the prices are pretty cheap. I would like to know what sort of issues have you faced or heard with these old Humvees?

I can't image these wouldn't be great overlanding trucks, after all the military used to get into rough spots.

Those older Humvees get horrible MPG, you can count on 4-5MPG, and that is Highway. Those have ~25 gallon fuel tanks, the math doesn't add up if you are heading out into the woods.

At my old shop, we had a Hummer franchise.
First off, military and civilian Hummers are not the same vehicle. Some parts are interchangeable and that's about it. The next thing no one realizes is these were not made to last. They were a lowest bidder contract, that's universal, easy to patch together then leave them behind on a battlefield when they break.

I want to say we had that franchise for about five years before they stopped making anything civilian. At my school, some of my students worked on them in the military. Don't care how cheap, I wouldn't own one. Having driven H-1 Hummers off road and well set up other off road vehicles, the Hummer looses out. People think their great because of advertising and articles written by people who don't know any better.

If you want to spend a ton of money just for the "cool" factor then there ya go.

Exactly! These things are no joke and while they look cool, man can have some problems!

Had enough of driving these back in the day. These trucks were BEAT by everyone. Couldn’t get me to buy one of these
