Aluminum vs plastic roof top tent shells

Durability for one. Second, easier to mount things on the roof like solar panels. Referring to the aluminum ones.
 
google "4x4 Colorado" tents. I saw these tents in Flagstaff a couple weeks ago. Impressive hardtops.
 
If you can get your hands on an aluminum shelled tent, that is going to be the best choice. The plastic will work and do its job, it's just subject able to warms and such as it ages and exposed to temperature influxes.
 
The guy in the video makes some good points but to me it seems he was angry due to his lack of research and poor decisions. On the rack capacities vs the tent weight, he missed a few points. I agree with asking the manufacture all these questions but in my experience in doing just that, most of the time you end up talking to a salesmen who is just reading the printed material. This is why I go to conventions, shows, expos. Now you can compare things side by side. Leaving the bedding inside was always a nice thing for me. In reality, simple math will answer your question.

I want to make a point here. He spoke about talking to a couple of representatives. One of them said he bedding wouldn't fit and another said it would. So, two questions. Is the packed height of both tents the same and how does the person your asking this, know exactly how much and what type of bedding you have? He spoke like the person you talk to knows everything about what you do and how you pack. Its very common for companies to either over state or under due to issues they've had. Again, this is where you do the math based on you.

For me, I'm more concerned with their track record. Almost all of these "U-Tube" guys come across as experts but in reality how long have they been doing this? In this case, how many tents have they been exposed to for over ten years of use? As I said, I want to know how the hinges, seams and zippers hold up. If there's a failure, can it be fixed or is the whole tent shot.
When I sold my RTT, it was about eight years old, I had to replace the cover once and the ladder was a POS. None of these made me angry, I just delt with it.
