A Cheap Alternative to a Winch: A Hand Winch

I think that we would all agree that the winch is the best recovery tool out there. However, as you would expect, something that works great and gets the job done without much effort isn’t going to be cheap.

This keeps adventurers that are on a budget with the only choice of traction boards or recovery equipment just in case there happens to be another vehicle around that can snatch you out of trouble.

However, what if I told you that there is a device that will do a very similar job to a winch, but is far cheaper?

Yes, you’ve read that correctly. The alternative to a winch that I’m talking about is called the hand winch.

In What Situations is a Winch Important?

A normal winch is an irreplaceable companion when it comes to solo travel. It provides peace of mind that even if you do manage to get yourself stuck you will be able to self-recover and get back on the road.

The way it works is simple, you unspool it, hook it up onto an anchor point, press a button, and you are out.

Now, as you would expect a winch also has its drawbacks. Firstly, it adds weight to the front end of the vehicle and will also need a steel platform to sit on. The added weight will need to be compensated with aftermarket suspension.

Secondly, it is an electrical motor; therefore, it can fail – especially if it sits around not being used much. So, if you have one make sure it works before setting off into the hard stuff.

Finally, it is expensive. Any good quality winch will set you back a good chunk of money that could have gone towards fuel for your travels.

So, What is a Hand Winch, and Can It Fix These Issues?

A hand winch like this one does exactly what it says. It is the same concept as a normal winch, but your arms are taking the place of electricity when it comes to getting work done.

Don’t be discouraged though, it doesn’t need strength to work – just time. If you pick a slightly more powerful one than your vehicle’s weight you will be able to get out of some bad situations.

The best part is that a hand winch is far cheaper to buy, won’t require any modifications to your vehicle except for some sturdy recovery points, and will barely add any weight.

Furthermore, if the steel rope is kept in good condition there is no fear of it malfunctioning when you need it the most.

So, for those who are on a budget but need a reliable and effective self-recovery tool look no further than a hand winch. The best ones are the Tirfor style winches which have been proven for decades! Pair this with some traction boards and you will be unstoppable.
