Well, it’s finally here…the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with a big ‘ol 6.4-liter 392 V8 under the hood.
There have been rumors about a V-8-powered Wrangler for quite some time, so this isn’t a total surprise.
But what might surprise some of you is the sheer power this thing has…
Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Engine
The 6.4-liter V-8 pumps out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. All that power helps propel the vehicle to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and finish off a quarter-mile run in 13 seconds flat (according to Jeep, anyway). Needless to say, that’s a lot faster than a normal Wrangler!
You can get a closer look at that engine (and the rest of this Jeep) in the official reveal video below from Jeep:
Fiat-Chrysler, Jeep’s parent company, has stuffed this same engine into other vehicles in their lineup, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, the Dodge Durango, the Dodge Charger, and the Dodge Challenger.
In the Wrangler, the engine is naturally aspirated and sends its power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. There is no manual transmission option, but there are paddle shifters on the steering wheel for a more exciting driving experience.
Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Off-Road Features
And if you’re worried that all the attention to the engine means the rest of this Jeep isn’t up to par for offroading, think again…
According to Jeep, this is the most off-road capable Wrangler they’ve ever produced. And from the specs, it sure looks like they aren’t kidding.
It has Dana 44 axles with electronic locking differentials. There’s a full-time two-speed transfer case with a 2.72 low-range gear ratio which results in a 48:1 crawl ratio. Jeep has fitted Fox shocks to this rig as well as an electronic front sway-bar disconnect. There’s a 3.73 final-drive ratio as well.
The Wrangler sits on 33-inch BFGoodrich K02 all-terrain tires wrapped around 17-inch wheels that are beadlock-capable.
Additionally, the Rubicon 392 has a two-inch lift that gives it 10.3-inches of ground clearance, which, along with improved suspension articulation results in a 44.5-degree approach angle, a departure angle of 37.5-degrees, and a breakover of 22.6-degrees. It’s also loaded with a stronger chassis, cast iron steering knuckles, and upgraded front control arms.
The Rubicon 392 can also handle itself in some pretty deep water.
Jeep says it can cross depths of 32.5 inches. Part of that capability comes from the new air induction system that can move up to 15 gallons of water per minute away from the engine. Not only that, but there is also a secondary intake, so even if the hood scoop isn’t functioning (say, due to being clogged with mud), the engine will continue to run.
Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Exterior Features
In case you want people to know it’s a 392, there’s 392 badging, a quad-tip exhaust, and a functional hood scoop.
Those unique markers can be paired with a wide range of exterior colors, including:
- Black
- Bright White
- Firecracker Red
- Granite Crystal Metallic
- Punk ’n Metallic
- Sarge Green Metallic
- Snazzberry Metallic
- Sting-Gray Metallic
- Billet Silver Metallic
