Kruger Bush Campers Kudu Review

If you’re a seasoned overlander, you know that not all trailers are built to handle the rigors of remote trails, tough terrain, and the demands of extended camping trips. However, other trailers most definitely are…

The Kruger Bush Campers Kudu caught my eye long ago, and I’ve since spent a good amount of time diving into its design, specs, and features. This is a trailer built to excel in the wild, offering a combination of toughness, comfort, and smart amenities for those who seek more than a standard off-road camper.

In this Kruger Bush Campers Kudu review, I’ll walk you through what makes this trailer a standout choice for serious overlanding enthusiasts, that way, you have the details you need to decide if the Kudu is the right choice for your needs. So, without further ado, let’s get this review started!

Kruger Bush Campers Kudu Review: Size and Maneuverability

The Kruger Bush Campers Kudu has an overall length of 20 feet 2 inches, a width of 7 feet, and a height of 7 feet 8 inches. The box itself is a bit more compact at 15 feet 9 inches long, allowing for a comfortable interior while keeping the trailer nimble enough for tight trails. Weighing in at 4,760 lbs dry, with a GVWR of 5,950 lbs, it’s a trailer that fits in that sweet spot of offering roominess without needing a large truck for towing.

For overlanders, these specs are key. The manageable weight means you’re not stressing your vehicle or burning excessive fuel to get to your favorite camping spot. Speaking of which, the Kudu’s size allows it to fit in rugged spaces that a full-size trailer wouldn’t, so you can park with ease on narrow trails or uneven ground. This makes it ideal for you if you prefer off-grid campsites far away from the weekend camping crowd.

If you’ve ever towed a big trailer like a 30+ foot-long bumper pull or a fifth wheel, you understand how nerve-wracking it can be towing something so large. Plus, large trailers simply don’t have the off-road features necessary to get off the beaten path, so you’re limited to good roads and established campgrounds.

But with a trailer like the Kruger Bush Campers Kudu, greater adventures await. Its compact size and maneuverability allow you to adventure further afield and explore more areas. What’s not to like about that?!

Kruger Bush Campers Kudu Review: Comfort and Sleeping Arrangements

It would be a mistake to think that because the Kudu is a compact trailer that it doesn’t offer much in the way of space for you and your family or friends…

One of the highlights of the Kudu is its ability to provide comfort in a rugged shell. Inside, you’ll find a well-thought-out living space, with a bump-out queen-sized bed (6 feet 4 inches long) that offers plenty of sleeping space for two. Additionally, there’s a bunk bed (2 feet 6 inches x 6 feet 6 inches) and a U-shaped banquette that can be converted to a bed (3 feet 2 inches x 6 feet 6 inches). With that many beds, this trailer can comfortably accommodate 4-5 people.

The Kudu also includes both an interior and exterior shower, a portable toilet, and a large awning room. This combination gives you flexibility; you can shower outdoors in nature or use the indoor shower for added privacy. Meanwhile, the awning room expands your living area significantly and provides shade and protection from the elements, which can make all the difference when you’re on an extended camping trip.

I have a buddy with a 32-foot fifth wheel that sleeps four people. Four! Though the enormity of the interior space in his rig is impressive, it still doesn’t sleep any more people than the Kudu, which is a full 12 feet shorter. Now, with that many people in the Kudu, it’s an intimate camping trip for sure. However, even with a full house, everyone has their own space to relax in this trailer. It truly is a marvel of efficient use of space!

Kruger Bush Campers Kudu Review: Essential Appliances and Systems

The Kudu’s array of appliances and systems is designed with off-grid independence in mind. Powering the trailer’s systems is a robust electrical setup that includes a 30 AMP DC charger, a 2000-watt inverter, and two 100 AH deep cycle batteries. The addition of a 200-watt solar panel on the roof means you can recharge the batteries while you’re camping, making this trailer a good choice for extended stays far from power sources.

Water is another essential element, and the Kudu has you covered with a 32-gallon fresh water tank, supplemented by a 22-gallon insulated plastic water tank. Both tanks are protected by stainless steel checkered plating to ensure the rough and tumble nature of off-road travel doesn’t damage the tanks. There’s also a 22-gallon grey water tank for collecting the water from the indoor shower and the kitchen sink.

Speaking of the kitchen sink, this trailer has an exterior kitchen that also includes a stove for whipping up awesome meals at camp. As you can see in the image above, the kitchen also boasts plenty of storage for your kitchen items. And since the kitchen enclosure lifts upward, it creates a protected space for cooking. The large awning helps in that department, too.

These systems make the Kudu particularly valuable for overlanders who prioritize self-sufficiency. The solar-powered setup allows you to maintain a comfortable temperature in the cabin by running the air conditioner or diesel heater. You can power small appliances and charge devices without relying on a generator, too, which can be loud and difficult to transport. The high-capacity water tanks mean you’ll be set for longer trips as well, minimizing your need to seek water sources.

In other words, this compact off-grid camper is a perfect choice if you want something that’s capable, comfortable, and sustainable for remote camping for days at a time.

Kruger Bush Campers Kudu Review: Rugged Off-Road Capabilities

While the features I’ve discussed thus far have been impressive, the Kudu really shines when it comes to off-road capability…

It’s outfitted with 265/75 R-16 tires on aluminum alloy rims, which offers solid traction and durability both on-road and off. It also features a heavy-duty two-inch independent suspension with dual shock absorbers, which offers a smoother, more stable ride when the trail you’re navigating gets washboarded, rocky, or bumpy.

The chassis is one-piece, welded, fully hot-dipped galvanized, and coated in tar paint over a thick, Q345 steel square tube A-frame. Why is this important? Well, it’s simple: it makes the trailer remarkably resistant to rust and impact damage. So, while this trailer is certainly eye-catching, it’s built to be used. This isn’t a pavement princess, that’s for sure!

This design is tailor-made for overlanding. The reinforced suspension absorbs the brunt of the bumps and jolts, keeping your ride stable and reducing wear and tear on the trailer itself. The dual shocks help keep the trailer grounded, which is especially useful on steep climbs or descents. And the heavy-duty chassis can withstand the unexpected scrapes and impacts that are part and parcel of off-roading, ensuring that your investment is protected over the long term.

Kruger Bush Campers Kudu Review: Customization Options

Kruger Bush Campers understands that not everyone has the same needs or wants when it comes to overlanding and camping. That being the case, they’ve designed the Kudu with customization in mind.

For example, you can up the capacity of the trailer’s solar system by adding an additional panel on the roof. With 400 watts of solar, you can keep the trailer’s systems running seamlessly and have the ability to recharge the batteries faster, too.

Another electrical-related upgrade you can add is front and rear Anderson connections. These connections are needed for electrical and towing systems. By adding them front and rear, you increase the Kudu’s compatibility with a broad range of overlanding accessories, such as front and rear rock lights to help you light the trail when driving at night.

Kruger Bush Campers also offers what they call a “rugged off-road package.” This is perhaps the most important option available, as it provides a reinforced suspension, off-road tires, and higher clearance for the trailer. This combination of upgrades makes the Kudu even more capable of tackling difficult terrain so you can get further off-grid. Nice!

The Kudu’s customization options allow you to configure it based on your specific overlanding requirements. Whether you’re preparing for winter camping, planning to go off-grid for weeks, or simply want added more ground clearance for rough terrain, these options help make the Kudu your personalized base for outdoor adventures.
