Rinse Off Portable Camp Shower First Impressions

I love a good camping trip…

The scenery, fresh air, and opportunities to hike, bike, and enjoy the company of family and friends in the great outdoors are all prime benefits of packing up and heading to the mountains (or the beach or the desert) for the weekend.

But all that outdoor activity means my gear gets dirty, and so do I! And as a boy dad, I can tell you first-hand that my kid is the dirtiest thing at camp. That’s where the Rinse Off portable camp shower really shines.

Now, it’s been about a month since I picked up this portable camp shower, and I can tell you that it isn’t just a camp shower. I use it for so many other purposes around camp, making it a versatile and functional addition to my camping gear. Let’s dive into the specs and features of Rinse Off and explore my first impressions, too!

Rinse Off Portable Camp Shower Specs

This portable camp shower offers a 4-gallon capacity in a BPA-free container. The wide-mouth opening on top makes filling it with hot or cold water easy. I fill this bad boy up before I leave, and combined with my Rotopax, I have plenty of water to wash dishes, brush my teeth, and do a quick body rinse on my weekend adventures.

The container comes with a CNC-machined aluminum cap (not a cheap plastic one that’s bound to break…) and a nozzle swivel made of the same material. The nozzle offers a multi-pattern selection with a mist option, while the 9-foot BPA-free flex lite hose gives you ample wiggle room for washing up without worry of kinks.

This made-in-the-USA product is built to last, too. The container is rotationally molded using military-grade materials and has brass mounting inserts. The aluminum sides offer further durability for rough-and-tumble situations. It has a ridge lock bottom to prevent the container from sagging, and on top is a big, beefy handle that makes carrying the Rise Off an easy task.

It’s a great size as well. At just 9 3/4 inches wide by 10 1/2 inches long and 16 inches high, it has a small footprint that won’t take up a ton of space inside your car or the bed of your truck. The saying “good things come in small packages” certainly applies!

Rinse Off Portable Camp Shower Features

rinse off explore hardware

Rinse Off has a number of models, but I opted for the Rinse Off Explore, which is battery-powered.

The unit comes with a 12-volt 5AH sealed lead-acid battery that can be charged using a 12-volt AC wall charger. The battery runs the integrated pressure pump, which provides pressure at 1.2 gallons per minute at 45 psi.

This setup gives you 20 fill-to-empty cycles before a recharge is necessary. That’s about 80 gallons of water it can run through on a single charge. Nice!

I have to admit I had my doubts about how much pressure this thing could produce, but I have been pleasantly surprised by its output. It was designed to get dirt and grime off of you, your bike, your dog, and in my case, my kid, so it has a robust output that certainly gets the job done.

Let’s take a look at a few different use cases to see just how versatile this portable camp shower has been in my month or so of testing.

Use Case: Rinse Off for Rinsing Off

Obviously, the Rinse Off portable camp shower is great for, well, rinsing off

Whether I need to wash the dirt off my face, wash my hands before dinner, or take a full-on camp shower, Rinse Off provides all the water and water pressure I need to do so. It’s easy and intuitive to use, too, so my young son has no problem using it on his own to get cleaned up for dinner or before going to bed.

The four-gallon capacity would go pretty quickly in a group camping situation, but, again, the large-mouth opening makes it easy to refill the Rinse Off container for extended use.

Use Case: Rinse Off for Dish Duty

I love to cook when I’m camping, but that means having a lot of dishes to do when it’s all said and done…

When I’m camping with my Turtleback Expedition trailer, I have a 40-ish gallon water tank, a pump, and hot/cold water built into the trailer that serves me quite well. But when I’m tent camping, I don’t have that luxury. That’s where the Rinse Off portable camp shower comes in so handy!

As you can see above, I simply position Rinse Off next to my camp kitchen table and use the 9-foot hose to fill the sink with water. Then, I use the multi-spray nozzle to rinse off each dish and repeat the process until all the dishes are done. It couldn’t be easier!

Use Case: Rinse Off to Clean My Tent

No matter how hard I try, I still manage to track dirt, sand, grass, leaves, and other stuff into my tent that doesn’t need to be there. Plus, the exterior of the tent can get pretty dirty, especially if I’m camping in inclement weather.

This portable camp shower is the perfect solution for sprucing up the tent before I pack up and head for home. Usually, a good session with a broom and dustpan is all I need to get the interior taken care of, but sometimes rogue muddy footprints find their way in. All I have to do is give them a quick blast with Rinse Off and wipe them up with a paper towel.

The Rinse Off portable camp shower really shines when cleaning the exterior of the tent, though – especially the bottom of the tent and the underside of my tent footprint. As noted earlier, the pressure provided by the Explore battery-powered model is surprisingly robust, so I can make quick work of cleaning the dirt and grime off my tent so it’s ready to rock for the next use.

This Portable Camp Shower is an Excellent Primary or Secondary Shower

As I mentioned earlier, when I’m camping with my trailer, I have a full-blown water system at my disposal. In those situations, Rinse Off is a great backup in case something goes awry with the trailer’s system.

It’s also nice to have as a supplementary water source in group camping situations. For example, I might have my son use my trailer’s water system to shower while I use Rinse Off to give his bike a good rinse after we’ve hit the trail for a few hours. I often camp with other dads and kids, so having one setup for showering and another for cleaning gear, dishes, and so forth helps streamline the process.

Of course, as I explained in the use cases above, Rinse Off is a fantastic primary shower, too. For my money, this is the ideal solution for having water storage and showering capabilities when I’m tent camping. And if you’re like me, you have a lot of gear to take camping, so space is at a premium in your vehicle. But with a small form factor, Rinse Off is something you can easily put in your vehicle without having to leave something else behind. It’s a win-win!
