“Sport utility trailer” is not a phrase I thought I’d ever be writing, yet here we are! Just like a sport utility vehicle offers, well, utility, a sport utility trailer offers the same. It’s a go-anywhere, do-anything type of trailer that helps you adventure more.
A while back, I headed up to Minnesota to check out one of the best sport utility trailers on the market. It’s called Space Trailer, and as I discuss in my video below, it’s an absolute masterpiece:
As they say, small axes chop big trees, and this trailer certainly fits the bill. It’s small, nimble, and lightweight, yet offers tons of storage and can be customized for uses ranging from kayaking to quick runs to the hardware store to overlanding and just about anything else you can imagine.
So, the question is, what are the biggest reasons why you need a sport utility trailer like this in your life? Let’s find out!

A Sport Utility Trailer Offers Lots of Utility
The whole point of a sport utility trailer is utility, and Space Trailers delivers on that front…
As I noted in the introduction, this trailer can be used for all sorts of adventures, be that camping, overlanding, kayaking, biking, or whatever other kind of fun you have in mind. As I’ll discuss a little later, all that utility comes in many forms. On the one hand, you get a spacious cargo tub for keeping gear out of sight and out of the elements. On the other hand, you get a trailer that can be outfitted with accessories galore to give it all the more utility for your needs. Nice!
Where traditional trailers might be something you use only for outdoor adventures, Space Trailers gives you the functionality to use it for mundane weekend warrior tasks.
For example, if you buy a new washer and dryer from the nearest big box store, you can use your Space Trailer to go fetch it and avoid paying delivery fees. Just pop the lid off the storage tub, hook the trailer up to your vehicle, and you have the perfect utility trailer to get the job done.
Likewise, this trailer is perfect if you need to help someone move (or move yourself, for that matter). Again, the removable lid gives you the flexibility of transporting your stuff in an enclosed space if the weather is poor or moving large items with the lid off.
Heck, you can use this trailer for fun stuff, too, like tailgating at your favorite sporting event. Truly, just about anything you can cook up where you might need a trailer, Space Trailers has the utility you need.
Sport Utility Trailers Have Lots of Storage
As you can see above, the Space Trailer storage area is quite large – it’s a 4×7 foot area that’s big enough for even the biggest outdoor gear. But it isn’t just an empty box where you throw stuff…
The storage tub has a drop-down rear tailgate that offers unencumbered access to your gear. There’s no need to lift what you need up and over the sides of the tub. Instead, just drop the tailgate and pull your kayak oars, tent, or whatever else you need out of the trailer.
Obviously, as you can see in the image above, the drop-down tailgate also makes for a nice sitting area to get ready for your adventures. Have a seat, put on your hiking boots, get the hook on your fishing line, or get your wet suit on, and you’re ready for your next adventure!
Perhaps the best part about the Space Trailer storage tub is the removable .25-inch-thick HDPE lid. The lid has a UV protectant to prevent fading and an aluminum frame to provide rigidity without adding a ton of weight.
Furthermore, the lid is supported by gas struts, so lifting the lid and keeping it in the open position is taken care of for you. Space Trailers offers heavy-duty gas struts as an optional feature, too. If you plan to add a rack, bikes, kayaks, a tent, or some combination thereof, the heavy-duty struts are a must.
So, the combination of the storage tub, lid, and gas struts gives you tons of usable storage space. Keep most of your gear in the tub and get easy access by lifting the lid and dropping the tailgate. Add more storage by accessorizing the trailer with roof-mounted options (discussed below). What’s not to like?!

You Can Accessorize Your Trailer for Your Adventures
Another prime feature of a sport utility trailer like Space Trailers is that you can add all sorts of accessories to make it a more functional utility trailer for your needs.
If you take a peek at the Space Trailers accessories page, you’ll find goodies such as:
- Kayak Rack
- Bike Rack
- Rooftop Tent
- Awning
- Dual Hitch Mount for a Bike Rack
You can also add different rims and tires, a security kit to prevent theft, and a Dometic cooler while you’re at it, too.
Personally, I think the best use of accessories on a sport utility trailer like this is to mix and match. As you can see above, a cargo box and bike rack are perfectly sized to fit on the trailer side-by-side. Alternatively, you could add a rooftop tent and an awning if camping and overlanding are more your style.
If you want a sleek, low-profile setup, add Space Bars to the trailer, throw a low-profile rack on it, and use it for small item storage while the bulk of your gear rides inside the storage tub. Of course, you can also forego any added accessories and use the trailer as-is, which has all the functionality you need.
A Sport Utility Trailer is Easy to Tow and Use
A final reason why a sport utility trailer is such a good option is that they’re easy to tow. As you can see above, the trailer is proportioned perfectly to be towed by a typical SUV. Its tires track nicely with the vehicle’s tires, and it isn’t overly wide to inhibit your view behind.
What’s more, this trailer is featherlight and can be towed by smaller vehicles like Subarus. The lightweight construction means your vehicle doesn’t have to work as hard to tow this trailer up steep inclines or cruising at speed on the highway.
Maneuverability is a Prime Feature of This Trailer
Another benefit of the size of this sport utility trailer is that it’s easy to maneuver when you get to where you’re going. If you’re like me and you’ve towed some big rigs, you know the feeling of dread when you get to the fuel station and you know you’ll have a tough time getting in or out (or both). Likewise, getting to the campground and realizing it’s a tight fit is not a good feeling at all. That’s not a concern with Space Trailers!
You can back this trailer up with ease, even into the smallest campsites. Maneuvering around busy parking lots or fuel stations is easy as well. And when you’re done adventuring and need to unhook the trailer and store it, that process is simple, too. Heck, this thing even stores on end to save space!
Ultimately, what’s truly important about getting out and enjoying this big, beautiful world of ours is taking the time to do so. It’s far too easy to think, “Oh, I’m too busy” or “It’s to expensive.” So, the first order of business is to make adventuring a priority.
Having said that, gear like a sport utility trailer makes getting out more all the easier. Space Trailers helps you haul your gear, keep it organized, and access it easily, all without breaking the bank or taxing the abilities of your vehicle. In other words, a Space Trailer is the ideal companion for your adventures, whatever they might be!
