2022 Ford Maverick

A new style of pickup trucks is starting to enter the market – the compact pickup truck. We’ve seen Hyundai do it with the Santa Cruz and now Ford has decided to enter the game with the Maverick.

I believe that such trucks will increase in popularity as they combine the benefits of a pickup truck with the drivability, comfort, and fuel economy of an SUV.

So, without further ado, let’s dive into everything we know about the 2022 Ford Maverick 4×4.

2022 Ford Maverick 4×4 Size

Currently, the smallest truck in the Ford line-up is the Ranger – but not for long. The Maverick is 199.7 inches long which makes it nearly a foot shorter than the 210.8-inch Ranger.

The Maverick will be available in just one cab and bed configuration – a four-door five-seat cab with a 4.5-footbed. This pickup will be aimed towards families and not so much the agricultural workers; therefore, it makes sense that Ford only offers one cab configuration.

What is the Ford Maverick 4×4 Based On?

The ford maverick 4×4 is related to the Ford Escape and the Bronco Sport meaning that it is going to be a unibody vehicle. It will feature independent suspension in all four corners and a low-range gearbox is highly unlikely. So, just like the Santa Cruz, we have a pickup that is based on a car – less capable off-road, but more drivable and economical on road, exactly what the modern-day market looks for.

Because it Is based on a unibody construction there is no gap between the body and the bed. Furthermore, these types of platforms provide exceptional structural rigidity; therefore, we can expect some good payload numbers from this vehicle.

The Ford Maverick Will Come Standard as a Hybrid.

Being a hybrid, ford maverick 4×4 combines both internal combustion and electricity. The engine will be a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder producing 162HP when isolated. The electric power system, which uses a 94kW liquid-cooled battery, is located at the back. When both the internal combustion engine and electric systems are combined the Maverick has a total output of 191HP.

The power is sent to the front wheels through an electronically controlled transmission. The biggest benefit of the hybrid system is fuel economy. Ford is targeting 40MPG in the city and 500 miles of range on a single tank of gas.

Speed is not a feature of this truck, as 0-60 will happen in 8.6 seconds. But at low speeds, the Maverick will be able to run on just electricity.

Sadly, the hybrid will only be available as a front-wheel-drive; however, there is another option.

Ford will offer the Maverick with a 2-liter turbocharged engine that will produce 250hp and will not be paired with an electric system. All trucks offered with the 2-liter engine will provide the option to choose between a 2WD or an AWD version.

An FX4 package will be available as an optional extra in which accessories such as exposed tow hooks, skid plates, and all-terrain tires will be offered to increase the off-road capabilities of the ford maverick 4×4.

The turbocharged version of the truck will hit 60 in about 7.8 seconds.

As mentioned above, the bed will be 4.5 feet long with the tailgate closed and 6 feet long with the tailgate open.

The tailgate can lock at different positions which will help with carrying objects. Tie-down points and a 400W inverted are both located in the bed.

Towing / Payload Figures

Ford has stated that the front-wheel-drive hybrid will be able to tow 2,000 pounds which isn’t much; however, a 4,000-pound tow package is going to be offered with the 2-liter turbocharged engines. Therefore, if you need more towing capabilities you will have to go for the turbocharged variant.

The Maverick hybrid offers a 1500-pound payload rating – an impressive rating if you consider that the Ranger offers similar payload numbers.

Pricing is perhaps the most impressive part of the Maverick. The base model will start from just $19,995, which makes it more affordable than a base Honda Civic – remember, this is a hybrid pickup. Kudos to Ford!

We hope that when the Maverik is launched in fall of 2021 it will provide the opportunity to a broader number of people to access adventuring and overlanding due to its low pricing.
